China sourcing agent OEM projects require a different process from buying standard catalog products. Custom manufacturing introduces drawings, tooling, approved samples, packaging, branding and production-control requirements that need to be managed before mass production begins.
OEM vs ODM
OEM usually means producing to the buyer’s design or specification. ODM generally involves adapting an existing manufacturer design. In practice, many projects sit somewhere between the two.
Start With a Controlled Specification
Provide drawings, dimensions, materials, tolerances, colors, performance requirements, branding and packaging details. The more critical the product, the more important revision control becomes.
Select the Right Manufacturer
Not every factory that can make a standard product is suitable for custom development. Evaluate engineering capability, tooling, prototype support, production process, QC and willingness to document changes.
Tooling and Development
Custom molds, dies, fixtures or software may be required. Buyers should clarify tooling ownership, maintenance, expected life and what happens if the supplier relationship ends.
Golden Sample Approval
A clearly approved sample should become the reference for mass production where practical. Record the final version so later changes are not confused with earlier prototypes.
Branding and Packaging
OEM projects often include logos, labels, manuals, cartons, inserts, barcodes and retail packaging. Artwork should be approved before large-volume printing.
Production Change Control
Factories may propose material or component substitutions during production. Any change affecting form, fit, function, appearance or compliance should be reviewed before implementation.
Quality Control
QC should focus on measurable product requirements, not generic appearance checks. Inspection points may include dimensions, materials, function, finish, packaging and labeling.
Supplier Confidentiality
For sensitive products, buyers may use appropriate confidentiality and commercial agreements. However, practical control also comes from limiting unnecessary disclosure and documenting ownership of tooling and files.
Multi-Supplier OEM Projects
Some products require packaging, accessories or components from separate factories. WMConstr can coordinate supplier matching, samples, production follow-up, QC and China warehouse consolidation across those vendors.
Send your drawings, specifications, packaging requirements and estimated quantity for OEM or ODM supplier evaluation.
