Knowing how to install a prepaid water meter correctly is essential because installation affects measurement performance, valve operation, leak prevention and the customer experience.
Prepaid meters also involve more than pipework. Depending on the system, installation may include account initialization, IC cards, tokens, communication settings or valve commissioning.
Before Installation
Confirm meter size, connection type, flow direction, operating pressure, installation orientation, required straight-pipe arrangement, valve configuration, prepaid system type, accessories and project specification.
Inspect the Pipeline
Before installation, flush the pipeline where required to remove debris. Foreign material can damage valves, measuring components or strainers. The pipe should also be supported so excessive mechanical stress is not transferred to the meter body.
Follow the Flow Direction
Most meters have a flow arrow marked on the body. Install the meter in the same direction as normal water flow. Installing a meter backward can cause incorrect operation.
Check Installation Orientation
Some meters are designed for specific horizontal or vertical orientations. Follow the manufacturer instructions and project specification rather than assuming every product works identically in every position.
Use Appropriate Isolation Valves
Isolation valves upstream and downstream can make future maintenance easier. For prepaid meters with an integrated valve, do not confuse the internal control valve with external isolation valves used for maintenance.
Keep the Meter Free From Pipe Stress
Connections should align naturally. Do not use the meter body to force misaligned pipework into position, as excessive torque can damage threads, flanges, seals or the housing.
Commission the Prepaid System
After mechanical installation, prepaid functions must be activated. For IC card systems, commissioning may include meter initialization, customer account creation, management card setup, credit loading, customer card assignment and valve testing.
For token systems, commissioning can include meter registration and token validation. Smart prepaid systems may also require communication or platform configuration.
Test for Leakage
Slowly restore water pressure and inspect inlet, outlet, threaded joints, flanges, seals and valve body. Do not proceed to customer handover without confirming that the installation is leak-free.
Test Meter Operation
Run water through the meter and confirm consumption is recorded. For prepaid products, also test displayed balance, credit deduction, low-credit behavior, valve opening, valve closing and recharge procedure.
